The performing arts in New Zealand is more than an art form. It is also big business with total annual income in excess of $100 million. This level of economic activity requires skilled financial management.
In recent years the performing arts schools and universities have recognised this by offering courses in performing arts management. Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School is one such example, offering the degree Bachelor of Performing Arts Management.
Chris Prowse says that from his experience of teaching at Toi Whakaari, a missing ingredient has been a practical handbook to help not only those studying performing arts management but also the actors, dancers, and other performers who may have to manage their own productions or performing arts organisations.
