Aroha Mataira, an elderly Māori woman, clings to the last acre of her tribal land. A convinced and passionate Christian, she attempts to instruct her son Johnny and daughter Queenie in Pākehā ways, against which, in various modes, they rebel. Her world smashed, Aroha wills herself to death.
