Alex Medland

Alex Medland (Kai Tahu) is an award-winning playwright and actor based in Edinburgh. In 2019, she trained at The John Bolton Theatre School in Melbourne in a short physical theatre course. Since graduating, she has been part of Auckland Theatre Company’s 2020 Young Writers Table and Te Pou Theatre’s 2022 Kōanga Festival.

In 2024, her play Becoming Jeff Bezos won her the Playwrights b425 Award. Becoming Jeff Bezos was also long-listed for A Play, A Pie and A Pint’s David MacLennan award and received support through Summerhall's 2023 Edinburgh Fringe Surgeries. She went on to write We’re Gonna Kill Billy, with support from Te Hono: Connection, which won the 2025 Adam Award for Best Play, Best Play by a Māori Playwright and Best Play by a Woman. She is currently the youngest person to have won the Adam Award in its 18 year history.

She is one of the founding members of Half Trick Theatre, a kiwi theatre company based in Edinburgh dedicated to making irreverent reinventions of untouchable classics.
