Tautai

A Tautai is a master fisherman and way-finder.

Maui is a too-cool-for-school Kiwi boy caught between two worlds: his Tokelauan mother’s hope that he’ll move to the safety and heritage of Tokelau, and the urban culture that has shaped who he is.

Maui and his best mate Hahave are doing some wayfinding of their own, through online gaming and ‘da biz’ of car theft.

Culturally displaced and emotionally vulnerable, Maui lives in the shadow of his older brother Tavita, who died in police custody. Tavita’s friend, Constable Upega, has had enough of Maui’s repeated run-ins with the law.

Maui is convinced Tokelau has nothing to offer him.

A dramatic, funny and heartfelt encounter.
