On July 16th, 2019, Dunedin's Baldwin Street lost its 'World's Steepest Street' title to a town in Wales. Having lost the Cricket World Cup final the day before, New Zealand's national pride was in tatters. The country needed a hero. What it got was an anxiety-prone local surveyor named Toby Stoff. Toby could sense an injustice. Like an echo from our colonial past, the British had taken something that didn't belong to them. 'Steep' is a musical that tells the true story of how one man and his theodolite took on the might of the Guinness Corporation, annoyed lots of Welsh
people, and brought hope back to a grieving nation. Battling ridicule, self-doubt, and the arrival of a global pandemic, Toby held strong to the belief that when something like this is taken from you, you must cross to the other side of the world... and get it back.
