I Travel Alone

The play is based on the life of New Zealand writer and poet Iris Wilkinson (1906-1939) and focuses on her 1938 journey through the middle of a war zone in China on her way to England. It is a condensed version of what she endured in a journey which was in reality far more complicated, perilous and challenging. Iris, who wrote under the pen name Robin Hyde, set off to England on her own. She met people who helped (and hindered) her along the way, but her only constant companions were her few belongings.
