The climate crisis is here. Where once we might have pretended it was happening somewhere else or was only going to hit us some time further down the line, it’s now clear that this human-made breakdown is having devastating impacts in Aotearoa New Zealand today. For the performing arts to continue, we have to change the way we’re doing business.
This is a guide for artists and companies touring theatre in and from Aotearoa. It’s aimed at those putting work on, rather than venues that host them, and at work going on tour rather than one-off or in-house seasons, however much of the information will be applicable beyond this.
This guide will help you understand and reduce the environmental impacts of touring theatre here and overseas, including emissions, waste, and environmentally harmful practices. It is structured chronologically – before tour, on tour, and post-tour – with links to articles from different disciplines as well as tools and templates, such as a materials tracker and green rider.
