Script Development

Playmarket's National Script Development Programme

Please note that one of the best ways to get your new play read is to enter one of our competitions, especially the Playmarket New Play Award, the Adam Playreadings and the Young Playwrights' Competition.  These are judged by panels of practitioners, so even if you don't win, your work will be on our radar.  Check "Opportunities" on our menu for details, and to receive our regular eBulletin with up to date details of events, just email us at info@playmarket.org.nz.

Script Assessments

This is a straightforward resource open to anyone, and is often our first contact with new writers.  Once we have received your script (email copy preferred) and assessment fee it will be sent to one of our assessors and returned to you within four weeks.

The fee is $125 (includes GST).  We also offer a further service for $190 (includes GST) providing an assessment and a one hour script consultation, either in person, or via phone or email if we are unable to find someone in your area.

Our assessor will consider the professional potential of the play, and as appropriate, will offer expert advice that will help towards your next draft. Please remember to include a cast list and a brief synopsis with your script.  It would be very helpful if you could also include a covering letter addressing the following questions:-

  • Briefly – what is your play about?
  • Is there a particular issue you would like us to focus our feedback on?
  • What do you think are the play's strengths and weakness?
  • Has your play had a reading or been performed?
  • Are there plans for a production in the pipeline?

- and of course please provide any other information you think may be relevant.

Please note that a favourable assessment and/or the completion of suggested revisions does not automatically lead to Playmarket representation.  We welcome re-submissions of further drafts of the same script but note that these will be charged the same fee.  Playmarket reserves the right to refuse to assess a script (very rare!).

Finally please remember that the assessment is written solely with you, the writer in mind, and intended for your eyes only.  You do not have permission to quote from your assessment for publicity purposes, or to use it as a reference for funding applications, etc.  (NB:- receiving an assessment does not make your play ineligible for any of our other opportunities.)

SO! - if you would like to submit a script, please email/post your script with a letter addressing the questions above to help our assessor, to the address below. Please also send your cheque, or if you prefer direct credit, our details are BNZ 02-0568-0020573-00.  Please let our accounts dept. know if you use this option (info@playmarket.org.nz).

Address for scripts:-  scripts@playmarket.org.nz (or Assessments, Playmarket, P.O. Box 9767, Wellington).

Professional Workshops, Labs, Readings

While we accept applications for development assistance from any New Zealand or resident playwright, we are more likely to support scripts that have a firm production date, scripts from clients, and those plays that do well in our competitions.

Please note that we don't want to give the impression that all scripts need to go through a development process - many are ready to go with little more than a slightly more intensive rehearsal schedule. However many scripts can derive enormous benefit from this sort of attention, and we do our best to identify the best development process for your play, and to design a programme appropriate to its needs.

Among the sorts of things we might suggest are:-

Theatre Workshop Partnerships:-

Long-term reading/workshop programmes for plays in partnership with theatres and companies.

Workshops:-

Workshops, usually of one or two days, for plays on their way to professional production.

Readings:-

Professional readings and feedback sessions for major new works.

PlayLab:-

Dramaturgical assistance for plays at various stages of development.

TheatreLab:-

Dramaturgical assistance for writers in a collaborative script process.

Client Status

Please note that a Playmarket member is not the same thing as a Playmarket Client. To become a Playmarket Client you need to be invited to do so by the director.  If you are interested, have had professional productions and feel you may be eligible, please enquire, and check out "Agency" in our menu for further details.

Competitions/opportunities

Please check under "Opportunities" in our menu for all details and up to date information on these.

We organise several competitions and other opportunities which we encourage you to take advantage of.  Please also keep an eye our eBulletin for most recent information. To receive our eBulletin, simply email us at info@playmarket.org.nz.

We strongly recommend the three competitions below as excellent opportunities to get your work read by industry professionals (and who knows, you might win!) We strongly encourage you to make the deadlines for these a writing goal.  For full details click the appropriate heading under "Opportunities" in our menu.
