FAQ's

Why do I have to licence a script?

This is the only way for playwrights to earn a living as often they receive nothing to write a play. It may seem like an easy thing to do but writing a good play is actually quite difficult - try it!

What are the rules for Copyright in the Education sector?

Copyright also extends to Dramatic works ie play, dance, mime, film scenario or script.  Most schools will have a Copyright License available through the NZSTA, unfortunately this only allows teachers to photocopy up to 10% of a work or one chapter of a work – whichever is the greater.

Therefore I just want to make teachers aware of what permissions are available under the Copyright Act that may be relevant to schools.

Allowed to: Make single copy for instruction purposes.
Limitations: Copying must be done by or on behalf of a teacher, no more than one copy on one occasion (does not permit multiple copying!) and you are not allowed to communicate the copy (i.e place the copy on intranet or e-mail to students).

Allowed to: Make hand-written copy of whole work by teacher or student for instruction purposes.

Allowed to: Make multiple copies of small extracts for educational purposes.
Limitations: This covers copying for students. Limited to 3% or 3 pages, whichever is greater). The work you copy from must not be copied again at the institution within 14 days and no charges can be made to students. Finally you are not permitted to communicate copies to students ( i.e place the copy on intranet or e-mail to students).

Allowed to: Make copies for performance by students for instruction purposes.
Limitations: Only allowed before an audience of students or staff at an educational establishment.  Parents/Guardians excluded.  Performance before a paying or public audience is not permitted.

So copying a play is allowed under the above guidelines, anything else is a breach of copyright. We can give schools a photocopy license for any plays that are Out of Print or unpublished for only $2.00 per copy. Please contact me directly info@playmarket.org.nz if you have any queries or would like a photocopy license for any NZ Play that we are permitted to license.
