As New Zealand's only playwrights' agency we represent almost all professional New Zealand playwrights. We also promote their work and welcome enquiries (agency@playmarket.org.nz) from professional producers and directors to discuss your needs and interest as to New Zealand work. We have strong inhouse knowledge of current and historical New Zealand work and are here to assist in matching producers and directors with plays. We are happy to provide reading copies of existing work to professional producers and directors.
As an agent we are responsible on the playwrights' behalf for the negotiation of license terms and commissioning contracts, and we then monitor, collect and distribute royalties. We provide dramaturgical assistance and professional advise to our client playwrights, and hold for producers' use a library of clients' scripts, client biographies, reviews and production information.
Enquiries about licensing scripts and obtaining performance rights should be made to Playmarket well before the start of rehearsals in case they are unavailable.
A non-returnable advance is paid prior to production to seal the deal. This is held against a percentage (usually 10%) of the total gross box office receipts.
To make an application for a license please submit the attached rights application form.
In New Zealand we have a standard detailed professional license contract, which you'll receive for signing if your application is successful. Please read it carefully to find out (or remind yourself of) the specific conditions under which the license is granted.
They include provision for box office reports, playwright credits on promotional material, copyright warranties from the playwright, rights in regards to alterations and rehearsals etc.
