Aladdin is traditional pantomime, but designed for a small cast, including some doubling of parts (which doesn;t mean other actors can't be added if amateur groups would prefer this).

Aladdin and his mother, Widow Twankey (the pantomime Dame), are poor and their future at the laundry looks bleak until their luck changes with the arrival of villain, Abanazar who uses Aladdin to retrieve the magic lamp from a cave where it has languished for many years. When Aladdin rubs the lamp the genie appears (in this version a Jewish Momma) and make his wishes come true. Aladdin falls in love with the beautiful Princess Jasmin, whose face he is supposed never to look on--who is about to be married at the Sultan's command, against her wishes.
Controlling events (to some extent) is The Grand Vizier, hopelessly in love with Widow Twankey, who is continually issuing tickets for those who will have to endure "The Terrible Punishment" . Aiding proceedings are Hankey and Pankey, identical twins, who get in the way of almost everything.
As with all pantos, there are numerous opportunities for theatres to place their own local and topical jokes. There is lots of humour, audience participation and many songs from Paul Jenden and Michael Nicholas Williams. With a target audience of four to ninety-four (i.e. a real family show) Aladdin is an end-of-year (or mid-winter) crowd pleaser.
