Jean, a teacher, becomes involved in the women's movement opposing the deployment of nuclear arms. Her lover threatens to leave her but Jean is not prepared to compromise. This is contrasted with glimpses of an American President cracking under the pressure of a failing marriage and the impending threat of a nuclear conflict.
