Galvin, Michael

Playwright Michael Galvin is the author of several plays, two of which The Ocean Star and Station to Station have been produced to acclaim. His first play, New Gold Dream is a comedy about the reunion of a once famous performance art group obsessed with 80s music. Michael has had short stories published in anthologies, The Picnic Virgin and Boy’s Own Stories

 In 2007 Galvin was awarded New Zealand's prestigious Bruce Mason Playwriting Award, for which he was commissioned to write War Hero, a play about conscientious objection adpated from the book We Shall Not Cease by Archibald Baxter

Galvin is amongst the original cast members of television show Shortland Street, appearing as Chris Warner in the very first episode on 25 May, 1992.  Michael is a talented actor, writer and singer. 

 A graduate of Victoria University and Toi Whakaari: New Zealand Drama School, Michael has also had an extensive stage career.  His theatre credits include roles in the New Zealand classics Ladies Night , Foreskin’s Lament , and Blue Sky Boys as well as Phantom of the Opera.    

In 1996, Michael took a break from Shortland Street to write and travel.  During this time, he had roles in the television productions Highwater and Coverstory, and feature film The Climb, which starred John Hurt. To the delight of his many fans, he returned to New  Zealand and Shortland Street in early 2001.
