A journalist for most of his career, Ian Cross wrote The God Boy while working on The Dominion. He was an associate Niemann Fellow in journalism at Harvard University in 1965-66 and five years later was the first holder of the Burns Fellowship at Otago University. He edited the NZ Listener from 1973-77, when he became chairman of the BCNZ.
