Readings in the Buffs

Playmarket, in association with principal sponsor the Adam Foundation, held a very successful weekend of vital new plays and conversation in 2008. The readings were held in:-

Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes (above BATS)
Saturday - Sunday November 8-9 2008

The selected plays drawn from the cream of new New Zealand plays not seen in Wellington before were:

Flintlock Musket by Kirk Torrance

Loser by Thomas Sainsbury

Fucking Parasites by Ninna Tersman

In terms of play selection Readings in the Buffs replaced the Adam Playreading Series. While plays submitted by Wellington playwrights were read for Write Out Loud , plays by New Zealand playwrights from outside of Wellington were read for Readings in the Buffs.  The Adam Playreading Series did not occur in 2008.

Starting in 1996, the aim of the Adam Playreading Series is to provide a bridge between new New Zealand plays and their eventual production on the Wellington stage, assisting in both their development and promotion, especially plays from outside the Wellington region.

The Adam Playreading Series has been instrumental in the development of some of the most successful New Zealand plays. This includes Ian Cross' The God Boy and Dave Armstrong and Oscar Kightley's Niu Sila. Both went on to have successful seasons at Downstage and seasons booked around the country.

Part of Playmarket's National Script Development Programme, the Adam Playreading Series recognises the value for the playwright in seeing their script put through its paces ahead of production. This is one of many script development initiatives we work in partnership with producers and theatres to organise nationally.

A further series of similar readings is planned for 2009.
