NZ THEATRE 2011 - 2015

A SURVEY OF WHAT'S BEING PERFORMED IN OUR MAJOR PRODUCING THEATRES. 

For the five year period 2011 – 2015:

• 348 productions from professional theatre.

• 64% of productions were NZ plays

• 12% of productions were by Maori theatremakers

• 4% of productions were by Pasifika theatremakers

• 22% of productions were by NZ women writers

• 28% of productions were by women writers (including NZ writers)

 

Research Parameters

  • The data applies to works performed between 01 January 2011 and 31 December 2015.
  • Data is collected solely about the major producing theatre companies in New Zealand.
  • Data is collected about scripted and devised works and musicals only .
  • Data is collected about works produced by theatres, works bought-in by theatres and tours undertaken.
  • The data is collected from season brochures, websites, theatres, Playmarket staff knowledge or licences.
  • Percentages are rounded to the nearest whole number.

Definitions

  • Theatre Companies are defined as the major Creative New Zealand recurrently-funded producing theatres. (Auckland Theatre Company, Silo, Centrepoint Theatre, Circa Theatre, The Court Theatre, Fortune Theatre, Taki Rua and Capital E National Theatre for Children)
  • Works are defined as scripted and devised plays and musicals. Does not include dance, improvisation, music/bands or stand-up comedy.
  • New Zealand works are defined as works created with a minimum of one New Zealand citizen or resident involved in the writing or devising of the work.
  • NZ works by women are defined as works with a minimum of one woman New Zealand citizen or resident involved in the writing or devising of the work.
  • New Zealand Maori or Pasifika works are defined as works created with a minimum of 1 New Zealand citizen or resident of Maori or Pacific Island descent involved in the writing or devising of the work.
