First performed in Dunedin in 2009, Hurai  by Harry Love is a story of Maori and missionaries in the early 19th century. As the European missionaries are confronted by Papa, a religious prophet espousing a potent mixture of Old Testament and Maori lore, the scene is set for a devastating collision of cultural and religious values. Modeled on the Greek Bacchae, Hurai draws on the religious movement led in the Bay of Islands in the 1830s by Papahurihia, also known as Atua Wera - the red/burning god.
