Drama Cuts Teachers Resource Book provides background resource for Drama Cuts - information on the play texts with a detailed synopsis of the entire play; writing and performing activities on individual plays and groups of plays and notes on the playwrights.
While the book of play excerpts can stand alone as a useful resource for teachers, it is in the Resource Book that the value of the excerpts is really highlighted for Drama and English teachers. Susan has provided the teacher with a wealth of material on each play, including thematic overviews, style overviews (with a short definition of each style), discussion questions on each individual play, and synopses of each of the plays from which the excerpts were taken.
There are suggestions for ways in which to use the play excerpts in the English and Drama classroom, along with templates for student worksheets. These pages may be photocopied for students to use – copyright extends to the photocopying of student pages. This is extremely useful for working teachers and, as a former teacher herself, Susan clearly has an understanding of what is useful for use in the classroom. My only minor gripe is that there does not appear to be enough room on the worksheets for comprehensive answers.
I highly recommend Drama Cuts for use in the high school Drama and English classroom. There is a wealth of possibilities on how to use these books in our teaching and I will definitely be including some of them in my teaching programmes for 2011.
