Carey, Rosalie
As well as teaching speech and drama almost consistently since 1940 (apart from the years training and acting in the professional theatre,) Rosalie was president of the New Zealand Speech Communication Dunedin branch for about fifteen years, (until she was able to hand over to a student), adjudicated Speech Festivals and took part in and adjudicated for Theatre Federation festivals, conducted sessions at conferences and served one term on the council of NZSA, was on the committee of the Wellington branch and President for one year).

She has had books published, including A Theatre in the House - the Careys' Globe (NZ Listener top ten 2000) and It's Not What You Know, which features homage to Auckland University's Community Arts Service and the Southern Comedy Players; four books of poetry and articles in such publications as Schools Journals, and NZ Listener. Her poems have won two national awards. She has had over a dozen plays produced, is a Life member of the Playwrights Association of New Zealand (PANZ) of which she was National President for many years and is an Honorary Life Member of the New Zealand Society of Authors Northland Branch.

At eighty-seven she is still active as teacher, public speaker, performance poet and fundraiser. Her book It's Not What You Know has recently been selected to go to the Frankfurt book fair.


ROSALIE CAREY'S FIRSTS

1923
- Rode on a cart in my mother's Girl Guide production of Dick Whittington.

1940
- Co-produced my dramatisation of Scott's Kenilworth and played Amy Robsart.
- Introduced Extra-mural speech training classes in four Hamilton Primary Schools.
- Passed ATCL with honours and gold medal.

1941  
- Passed LTSL with honours and gold medal .
- Produced my dramatisation of Stubbs at Fifty.

1943   
- Poetry readings with American servicemen on 1ZB.
- Published humorous verse (Whims of a WAAF).

1945   
- Sailed to England on first passenger ship to leave NZ after World War 11 to study drama and then work in professional theatres there for five years.

1947   
- Played Betty Doxy in The Beggar's Opera (John Gay) on BBC Television.

1954   
- With Patric Carey established The Academy of Theatre Arts in Wellington.
- Established ‘The Thursdays' teen-age and adult drama group in Wellington.

1958  
- Played Clytaemnestra in The Oresteia in première of Sir John Shephard's translation.

1959   
- Introduced drawing-room drama in Dunedin.

1961   
- With Patric Carey built and managed the first custom-built NZ theatre in with two-tiered stage.
- Established Globe Theatre drama school.

1962   
- Devised play for teen-agers in Theatre Federation Festival.

1967   
- Student programme of History of Costume and Manners later on DNTV2 along with other programmes on similar themes.

1968   
- Played Oenone in première of The Sore-Footed Man by James K. Baxter.

1969   
- Devised and directed Black Champagne - first globe Theatre review.

1970   
- Dramatised Janet Frame's A State of Siege and played Malfred Signal.

1971   
- Return season with Vice-Regal performance of A State of Siege.
- Guest actress Timaru Little theatre as Malfred Signal in A State of Siege.

1972   
- Flown to Wellington to perform Malfred Signal in a director's training course.
- Commissioned to re-dramatise Janet Frame's A State of Siege and to play Malfred Signal for NZBC in Christchurch.
- Creativity in the Classroom paper and demonstration for NZEI (published 1974).

1974   
- Poetry & drama readings (with music) with expatriot actors presented at New Zealand House, London.
- As Charter Member of Zonta International first Dunedin delegate to attend international conference (Boston USA)
   
1976   
- Poetry programme with senior members of Radio New Zealand staff in the Library Theatrette Wellington.
- Arranged produced readings in Newtown for Playwrights Association of New Zealand.

1981
- First NZ book on speech - Make Yourself Heard (published Mallinson Rendel).

1983
- Charlie/Comeback - Orignal script performed solo about fifty venues.

1984
- Established a Childrens' Theatre in Newtown (Wellington)

1986   
- As national president of Playwrights' Association of NZ visited provincial playwrights, taught speech, costume and manners and read poetry in schools, restaurants etc and marketed Over the Hill my first book of poems published Blackberry Press.
- Introduced Branch meetings to NZSA (PEN).

1987   
- Guest writer Denmark (West Australia) Arts Festival. Requested to write a play based on local legend - accepted by local drama society.

1989   
- Re-dramatised Janet Frame's A State of Siege (with narrator) and played Malfred Signal with the support of Dunedin Community Arts and Air New Zealand.

1996       
- Introduced poetry-readings programmes to Whangarei.

2000       
- A State of Siege (playing Malfred Signal) first independent production at Octagon Theatre Whangarei.
- Played ‘Old Lady' in Gregory King's first film Junk concurrently with ‘Mrs Flower' in  Being Eve.

   
2004   
- Staged and took part in two of my four short plays in my own home, and later elsewhere.

2005  
- First octogenarian to take part in Urbis Twenty-four-hour-deadline Theatre (Auckland).

2006   
- Played adult lead in two short films in two consecutive months, The Plant and Spinning Top shown in London and the Continent and on the Rialto continuous TV at Wellington Airport.

2007-8   
- TV advertisements one of which was filmed in Japan!
